Polyhydroxyls

Novomer is developing a large family of SustainolTM polyhydroxyls. The unique Novomer chemistry allows us to use a variety of starting materials to produce polyester, polyether, and block co-polymer polyhydroxyls. Our initial polyhydroxyl products are targeted for the flexible and rigid foam markets as well as the traditional CASE markets.

Traditionally, polyurethane products are obtained through reacting an isocyanate and a polyhydroxl in the presence of catalysts. This reaction forms repeating urethane groups or polyurethanes. The performance characteristics of polyurethanes are sometimes modified with a variety of additives, to increase, for example, strength, rigidity, or flexibility.

How They are Used

Polyurethanes have a wide variety of applications and are commonly found in rigid and flexible foams, adhesives, elastomers, and high-performance paints and coatings. Flexible foams are commonly used by furniture and automotive manufacturers, while rigid foams are widely used for insulation, appearing in the building and refrigeration industries. Polyurethanes are found in elastomers, adhesives, and coatings.

Features

Polyether polyols (PETP) are most often used in polyurethane synthesis, replacing polyester polyols (PEP) which were first used in commercial polyurethanes. PETP’s are typically less expensive than PEPs. Polyurethanes developed from PETP tend to have high moisture permeability and low glass transition temperatures. PETP polyurethanes work well in coating and paint applications. Another form of PETP, acrylated polyols (ACP), have useful thermal properties, and certain characteristics of acrylics. The characteristics of polyhydroxyls, such as molecular mass, number of hydroxyl groups, and molecular structure, affect cross linking of molecules in developing polyurethanes. This has a significant effect on the working properties of the final product.

Novomer polyhydroxyls, produced from plant-based or renewable raw materials, have less environmental impact and require less energy than conventional counterparts.
