Benefits of Using CO2

Sources of CO2

CO2 is produced as a byproduct of ethanol fermentation, reformers, natural gas wells, and the flue gas from coal-fired power plants. Novomer’s materials could use CO2 which originates from any of these processes.

Benefits of using waste CO2 as a raw material include the following:

  1. Reduced Fossil Fuel Consumption – Plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene are manufactured almost entirely from fossil fuels. Novomer replaces up to half of the fossil fuels in the materials with carbon dioxide.
  2. Carbon Dioxide Sequestration – Novomer’s materials store carbon dioxide during the life of the product and provides a means for sequestration. While the quantities Novomer requires are small compared to the amount of CO2 released on a global basis, this technology could serve as a stepping stone to larger volumes.
  3. Cost Competitive Without Subsidies – Novomer’s materials are expected to be cost competitive with or without a Carbon Tax or Cap & Trade System.

“Novomer’s CO2-based materials can be cost-competitive with traditional petroleum-based materials without a cap and trade system or carbon tax.”
