Novomer Process
Novomer’s process has the potential to enable a significant improvement in the manufacture of acrylic acid from both an operational and environmental perspective. The process is a blend of old and new technology that operates at moderate temperature and pressure. The old technology was practiced by Celenese up until the 1970’s when the process economics started to become unfavorable. Novomer’s technology improves upon that process with selectivities and conversions as high as 99%.
Novomer Process Characteristics:
- Mild operating conditions
- High yields and selectivity
- Low implementation risk – blend of old and new technology
- Operational flexibility to produce glacial acrylic acid or acrylates
- Glacial acrylic acid requires less separation and energy
- Standard equipment and materials of construction
- Estimated $100 million less capital required to build a plant than the propylene-based process used today
