Polypropylene Carbonate (PPC)

Overview

Novomer’s polypropylene carbonate (PPC) is synthesized by combining propylene oxide and carbon dioxide together in the presence of a proprietary catalyst. PPC has been synthesized previously by other companies, but Novomer’s catalyst system has several advantages which enables low cost, high performance, and environmentally friendly commercial materials.

Novomer's Catalyst Advantages

  1. Moderate Conditions – The reaction occurs at moderate temperature and pressure, requiring little additional energy for synthesis.
  2. Manageable Reaction Times – Novomer’s catalyst is over 25 times more active than previous systems developed to synthesize PPC and results in manageable reaction times.
  3. Low Cost – The catalyst system does not use precious metals and requires simple organic chemistry which keeps the cost low.
  4. Tunable Molecular Structure – PPC can be made in precise molecular weight ranges, creating materials tailored for specific industrial applications.

“Novomer’s CO2-based materials can be cost-competitive with traditional petroleum-based materials without a cap and trade system or carbon tax. This is very unique in the industry and will speed the technologies commercialization.”
